Field Case Study: Performance of Anti-Seepage Membrane in a Shandong Mine Tailings Pond After 3 Years

Basic Information

Location: Remediation project for a metal mine tailings pond in Yantai, Shandong; total area of 180 mu (approx. 12 hectares), comprising a main storage area, leachate collection pond, and supporting interception/drainage channels. 

Installation Date: April 2022. Product Used: 2.0mm thickened, anti-aging HDPE anti-seepage membrane specifically designed for tailings, installed as part of a composite system featuring a protective layer of filament/staple fiber geotextile and a bentonite waterproofing blanket. 

Operating Environment: Exposed to the elements year-round; temperature ranges from a summer high of 38°C to a winter low of -15°C; annual rainfall of approx. 660mm. Tailings contain mildly acidic/alkaline leachate; the original soil base at the pond bottom is highly permeable, posing a risk of groundwater contamination.

Actual Performance Results

1. Long-term stable anti-seepage performance; no aging, damage, or leakage. After three full years of service, the membrane shows no signs of aging, cracking, chalking, or punctures; heat-welded seams on slopes and the pond bottom remain intact and secure. It completely blocks leachate from penetrating the underlying soil, and pollutant levels at groundwater monitoring points consistently meet standards, effectively resolving previous environmental risks associated with leakage.

2. Increased leachate recovery and reduced O&M costs. Leachate is channeled directly into the collection pond for centralized treatment, eliminating losses due to underground seepage. Costs for wastewater treatment chemicals and energy consumption have dropped by 32% year-on-year, while additional engineering expenses for routine leak detection and remediation have been eliminated.

3. Enhanced slope stability and resistance to extreme weather. The slope membrane shows no slippage, bulging, or tearing during heavy rains or flood-season torrents. It exhibits no shrinkage or cracking under freeze-thaw cycles and demonstrates excellent resistance to deformation caused by tailings settlement and the pressure of stacked materials. 4. Corrosion and slurry erosion resistance; exceptional long-term durability. Even with prolonged exposure to acidic tailings leachate and immersion in slag, the geomembrane shows no signs of corrosion, swelling, degradation, or deterioration.
